I was lucky enough to be selected to work on the Indiana Pacers Foundation Annual Report
while in a Professional Practice class during the first semester of my senior year at
Herron. The project was a lot of fun because I got to do everything, from designing to
art directing professional freelancers, to shooting my own photographs. It was also
my first time working with a printer designing a real project to go to press.
I was also allowed to concept the Annual Report myself, which was a lot of fun. The concept
for the book was to play heavily on the Pacers Foundation's slogan, "Putting young
dreams within reach." The book portrayed children as monumental, often the lens of the camera
was underneath the children, shooting up at them, or looking them directly in the face, treating
them as equals, or more importantly, portraying them as human beings with endless potential.
The visual narrative in the book even puts the images of the children above an image of
the sky, which metaphorically elevates their status even more, and alludes to the idea
of dreams and potential.
In addition, the images were rendered/manipulated in photoshop to give them a "dreamy"
quality, which visually reinforced the ideals of the Pacers Foundation.
The type was set in Mrs. Eaves and the typographic treatment was left quiet and
simple, to give the piece a sense of timelessness. It was also important that the overall
look and feel of the book remain uncluttered and accessable. The visual narrative of the
images could not be incumbered by the typographic aspects or the general layout of the book.
